CHORDOMAS: Technologies, techniques, and treatment strategies.
نویسنده
چکیده
Acclaimed surgeons from Brazil, Canada, Japan, Turkey, the USA, and the UK are contributors. The book starts with a historical overview, epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, cytogenetics, local invasion and metastasis, and pathology. A thorough discussion covers diagnostic radiological and radionuclide imaging such as MRI, PET; SPECT, PET-CT, and PET-MRI, and clinical traits of skull base and spinal chordomas as defined by imaging modalities.

Tumor-biology and current treatment of skull-base chordomas.
Chordomas are rare, slow growing tumors of the axial skeleton, which derive from the remnants of the fetal notochord. They can be encountered anywhere along the axial skeleton, most commonly in the sacral area, skull base and less commonly in the spine. Chordomas have a benign histopathology but exhibit malignant clinical behavior with invasive, destructive and metastatic potential. Genetic and...
متن کاملPrimary chordomas of the cervical spine: a consecutive series of 14 surgically managed cases.
OBJECT Cervical chordomas are rare lesions and usually bring about challenges in treatment planning because of their wide extension and complicated adjacent anatomy. There are few large published series at present focusing on cervical chordomas. The authors studied a consecutive series of 14 patients with primary cervical chordomas who underwent surgical treatment and were observed between 1989...
متن کاملSurgical seeding of chordomas.
OBJECT Chordomas have a high propensity for local recurrence and progression, as well as for systemic and cerebrospinal fluid metastasis. The authors identified and analyzed a series of patients with chordomas, focusing on an underrecognized entity--surgical seeding. METHODS In a retrospective analysis of 82 patients with chordomas treated over a 10-year period (1990-2000) the authors found s...
متن کاملChordoma: current concepts, management, and future directions.
Chordoma is a rare bone cancer that is aggressive, locally invasive, and has a poor prognosis. Chordomas are thought to arise from transformed remnants of notochord and have a predilection for the axial skeleton, with the most common sites being the sacrum, skull base, and spine. The gold standard treatment for chordomas of the mobile spine and sacrum is en-bloc excision with wide margins and p...
متن کاملCurrent Status of the Treatment for Sacral Chordomas and its Future Trends
Chordomas are rare slow-growing, low to intermediate-grade malignant neoplasms (less than 5% of all primary bone neoplasms); however they sometimes metastasise to distant organs. The 10-year overall survival rate is relatively low. The sacrococcygeal region is one of the most common sites. Intensive surgery is the first line for the treatment, since chordomas are resistant to chemotherapy. In t...
